So...ONLY Nobunaga changes genders? Interesting..and Nou-hime is played by the most over-rated "beauty" in Japan, Koyuki. Well, at least my homeboy Nishida Toshiyuki is in it as Nobuhide. _________________

Can anyone explain the Japanese penchant for gender-swapping? This seems to be a constantly recurring theme in all their entertainment media. Is it derived from the Kabuki tradition?

| I'd have to second that question. I remember in one of the podcasts sekai and shuko were mentioned, with sekai being an established story and shuko being variations upon that story. Apparently this trend was particularly a part of kabuki but could pertain to other aspects of Edo art as well. So perhaps the modern trend of gender-swapping in media is derived, as you said, from the kabuki tradition. It's interesting though that gender seems to be focused on over any other aspect. |

It goes far more back than kabuki, I believe. During Heian era, Shirabyoushi (dancer/singer/prostitute) dressed up as man to entertain their client.
Here is another twist to this. As time goes by, by the end of Heian era at least, male Shirabyoushi appears. They wore the same style of costume as female Shirabyoushi, the costume of female entertainers, making them cross-dresser-crossdressing.Weird, isn't it?
Also, cross-dressing appears through out Japanese history from the days of mythology, like Yamato-takeru no mikoto assassinating Kumaso Takeru by dressing up as a dancer girl. On this year's Taiga Drama, Taira no Kiyomori, it shows the famous episode in which the captured boy Emperor Nijyo (famous for his beauty like a beautiful girl) escapes from the insurgents by disguising as a waiting girl. |

At first i thought this was another Nohime drama but now im sold "Blood Drenched Warmongering Sengoku Trannies " .
Next up Aya Ueto as Takeda Shingen !.
On a more serious note there is a big budget Korean /Japanese co production on Yi Soon Shin currently filming ,Old Boy star Choi Min Shik will play the admiral and its being directed by the guy who did War Of The Arrows .
The film should be out early next year .The focus is on the battle of Myeongyrang which is also the films working title .
Kitano is back next month with "Outrage Beyond " which will debut at The Toronto Film Fest .
Been a real slim year for Samurai film fans so far . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

| I'm actually really looking forward to this, and I hope a sub comes out soon after it airs. I'm a fan of alternate histories, so hopefully this will be good. Though I have to wonder why they elected to go with Nobunaga rather than Kenshin, given that Kenshin is actually rumored to be a woman... or well, at least far moreso than Nobunaga. |

This isn't odd. There's a healthy anime/manga subgenre that portrays all the Sengoku daimyo/samurai as women, Sengoku Hime being one of the most popular along with Samurai Girls, Sengoku Otome, etc. Or this card game I have, with Oda gracing the cover...
The recent Sengoku Basara live action series that had Gackt starring as Oda Nobunaga took an interesting approach to Kenshin. They portrayed him as a man but had the part played by a woman. She was quite excellent, too-nailed the vid game/anime character and was quite the commanding prescence. I kinda wonder if she may not have been affiliated with Takarazuka, although I don't know if they let their people do independent projects.
Welcome to the board! |

What's odd about it compared to the ones you mentioned, Tatsu (and I'll throw in Sengoku Collection as well, since that's my guilty pleasure) is that in this case, Oda Nobunaga only is gender-flipped. In the anime series, generally all Sengoku busho are presented as females. I wouldn't bat an eye at a completely gender-reversed presentation, with Hideyoshi, Shibata Katsuie, etc. also as females. The fact that only Nobunaga is flipped makes this stand out. _________________

And there's Oda Nobuna no Yabou as well, if I'm correct? Yes, Japan does seem to have a penchant for swapping the genders in their media.
And thank you for the welcome! Glad to be here. |

Amami Yuki was an "actor" in the Takarazuka revue.
I remember she played Rhett Butler. _________________

She(Yuki Amammi) was also in Toshiie and Matsu as Haru the wife of Sasa Narimasa .
She made her debut in one of Teruo Ishii's Black Angel films .
Speaking of Takarazuka they once did a take on Shinsengumi . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

Don't know why I didn't notice this earlier (sorry!), but, while gender-swapping is definitely a thing in kabuki, I think the kabuki case is closely connected to the broader phenomenon of Mitate.
It's sort of a mode of parody. We very often see in ukiyo-e prints and paintings, pictures of Daruma dressed as a courtesan, or courtesans in the place of famous figures such as Confucius and the Buddha. I wouldn't be too surprised if there was some kind of all-women Chushingura illustrated book, or gender-reversed Ise Monogatari or something, though I'm not sure I've seen it myself... _________________ My blog on Japanese art & history: http://chaari.wordpress.com
