Ryukyu university team discovered the recked ship in Imari bay.

I saw in the article that they say the ship was from the 1281 Invasion, how can they tell when the ship was sunk? We're only talking about a 7 year difference over 700 hundred years ago. Did the Mongols use radically different types of ships in the 2 Invasions?

I would guess it's pretty straightforward. The probably found something easily dateable or something with a date stamped on it like a coin or something.

Also maybe the location tells them the timeframe. Historical records maybe give fairly precise locations of enemy ships as reported by the defenders.

Yeah, I'd assume it was based on coins or something. Carbon dating or the like cannot be that specific, especially as it would date the wood to when the tree was felled, not to when the ship sank.
