And, I've just received a clarification, that the museum knew all along what they had - it was only a "discovery" for the Japanese media. Seems to happen more often than you'd think - but, it's good to know that at least curators are more familiar with their collections than all of these "discovery" anecdotes would seem to imply.
A similar "discovery" took place roughly 10 years ago, when Japanese scholars "discovered" several paintings by Hokusai in the MFA Boston collection.
