Shizegutake 1583: who were Hashiba's generals at the battle ?

During this battle,
- Hashiba Hideyoshi commands 20,000 men of which 5,000 are left to Oda Nobuo in front of Gifu
- Hashiba Hidenaga commands 15,000 men posted at the fort of Tagami-yama

We know of course the names of the 7+ spears of Shizugatake, but these were junior samouraï looking for fame. We know also who holds the forts of Nothern Omi, which are recent supporters of Hideyoshi, like Takayama, Nakagawa or Hori and the former retainers of Shibata Katsutoyo at Nagahama.

Only Kimura Shigekore is one of the original senior retainer of Hideyoshi clearly mentionned as he has been left to supervise the front line.

If we go back to Yamazaki one year earlier, can we identify who is in which unit in Shizugatake ?

- Mikoda Masaharu 神子田正治: at one point he is mentionned having visited Hori Hidemasa at Saneyama. Is he with Hori ? Or as at Tennô-zan previous year, with Hashiba Hidenaga ?
- Kuroda Yoshitaka 黒田孝高: I guess no doubt here, he was with Hideyoshi, right ?
- Horio Yoshiharu 堀尾吉晴: he was with Hideyoshi, but was left in Ôgaki
- Nakamura Kazuuji 中村一氏: with Hideyoshi ?
- Katō Mitsuyasu 加藤光泰: with Hideoshi ?
- Yamauchi Kazutoyo 山内一豊: with Hideoshi at least in Ise but was he a major general at that time ?
- Ikoma Chikamasa 生駒親正: with Hideyoshi ? Was he a major retainer at that time ?

Where were also the following generals during the campaign ?
- Ikeda Tsuneoki 池田恒興
- Hachiya Yoritaka 蜂屋頼隆

Would you know any other general with major command at that time ?

What was the structure of command of the Hideyoshi(s and Hidenaga's corps ?

Thanks for any advise/help

Here's what I have, from a Meiji period battle dictionary/map book. Name readings might be off since I didn't have time to check them against the Sengoku Jinmei Jiten or a name dictionary.

Hashiba Hideyoshi-20,000
Niwa Nagahide-2,000-3,000, arrived in tandem with Hideyoshi

Hashiba Hidenaga-15,000
Hori Hidemasa-about 5,000, arrived in tandem with Hidenaga but to the north

Northern Forts West-East-both likely had about 500-1000 men
Kimura Shigekore-Shinmei
Kinoshita Kazumoto-Dougi

Southern Forts North-South-they all likely had just a few more troops than the northern Forts, maybe 1200 each

Takayama Nagafusa-Iwasaki
Nakagawa Kiyohide-Ooiwa
Kuwayama Shigeharu-Shizugatake

Ogawa Suketada was off to the east of the northern forts a little north of Nakanogou with maybe a thousand troops.

'Subgenerals' include Ogane (can't read given name) under Kimura, Hada Masachika and Asano Yahei under Kuwayama, and under Hideyoshi the 'Seven Spears' you already know about-Kato Kiyomasa, Fukushima Masanori, Kato Yoshiaki, Wakizaka Yasaharu, Hirano Nagayasyu, Katagiri Katsumoto, and Kasuya Takenori

Troop numbers seem high, which isn't unusual for books from this era, but the ratios should be close to what it actually was. Sorry there isn't a better breakdown of Hideyoshi's troops.

Thanks Tatsunoshi. The information about the forts is handily available, but you give me an excellent chance to recheck.
- Ogawa Sugetada was in fact protecting the fences and ditch accross the road between Dôgiyama and Higashinoyama.
- Niwa had 7,000 but succeeded to have 2 to 3,000 cross Lake Biwa on small boats.

I was more interested about the 15,000 from Hidenaga and 20,000 from Hideyoshi.

Who were the generals under them ? The seven spears definitively were not major commanders.

Correct, in the area north of the town I mentioned.

After talking to my father-in-law this morning, here are some more additions:

-Hideyoshi's strategist was Kuroda Kanbei

-Hidenaga's strategist was Hachisuka Masakatsu

-Kato Mitsuyasu, Yamauchi Kazutoyo, Asano Nagamasa, and Ikoma Chikamasa were all with the main Hashiba force-however, it's unclear which of the two Hashiba forces they were with. They would have been mid-level vassals with a few hundred troops except for Asano who was one of Hideyoshi's more important advisors. And of course the Seven Spears were with the main force.

-the full name of the 'Ogane' I mentioned earlier with Kimura is Ogane Touhachirou. Yamaji Masakuni was also with the forces in the northern forts. They were minor vassals.

Here's some info on what other Hashiba vassals were doing at the time of the battle:

-Miyoshi (Hashiba) Hidetsugu was in the Ise/Owari area fighting Shibata allies there (mainly Takigawa Kazumasu).

-Miyoshi's strategist was Nakamura Kazuuji

-Kitabatake (Oda) Nobukatsu was defending a castle in the Ise-Owari area-hard to tell exactly as the map had no borders

-Hachiya Yoritaka was defending a castle south of the site of Azuchi on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, towards the 'bottom' of the lake

-Gamo Ujisato was defending Hino Castle SE of Azuchi, maybe about halfway between Biwa and Owari

-Ikeda Tsunenori was defending the Kyoto/Osaka area, backing up the Niwa on the west shore of Lake Biwa

-Tsutsui Junkei was defending the area to the south of Lake Biwa from an attack from the SE

We also found Kimura is the man of many names, even compared to other samurai-among them Hitachi no Suke, Hayatonoshou, and Kazumoto among others. They're all the same person, though-Kimura Shigekore. Seems during the time of the battle he was best known by the title Hitachi No Suke.

Didn't turn up anything on Mikoda Masaharu.

thanks Tatsunoshi, that is again valuable information.

Some additions I have found:

- Yamaji Masakuni was with the forces in Northern forts originally but he betrayed a few days before the battle. He was the main information source to Sakuma Morimasa before his onslaught on June 10th. He was killed by Katô Kiyomasa near the lake Yogo the next day.

- Kimura Shigekore was the major commander in charge of the Northen fort on the West side of the road. There are effectively different names for Kimura mentionned and most often Hayatonoshou is used. The debate about the names leads to a question about whether Kimura was the father Sadashige or son Shigekore.

- Mikoda Masaharu is mentionned at least twice, once in a war council after the first attack on Hori by Shibata. Another time when he maintains morale with the troops after the destruction of Nakagawa Kiyohide. That's why I think he definitively was with Hidenaga.

- Hachizuka Iemasa was sent as reinforcement to Kimura Shigekore after the betrayal of Yamaji Masakuni. He is mentionned on an old map of Shizugatake in garrison on Shinmeiyama and is mentionned in the flank attack from Shinmeiyama against Sakuma Morimasa last stand in the morning of June 11th. Unfortunately the number of his troops is unclear.
His father is Masakatsu, which is the strategist of Hidenaga: really makes sense !! Thanks for the info.
