Isn't there a story that the cat was the only creature that did not weep at the death of the Buddha? Could there be an allusion to that story?

These memorial portraits (shini-e 死絵) were really popular. And yet, i don't know that we hear or see that much about them in scholarship (in English).

Maybe not in profit, but certainly in funding. Put a gender studies slant on it and you'll be rolling in grants.

Memorial portraits (now usually blown-up photos) are still a very important part of the funeral-related rites.
