| Could be interesting. We haven't had a taiga set in the Heian period in a while, have we? |

I believe the last was "Yoshitsune," in which my favorite character was Taira Kiyomori--his portrayal in that one was certainly more interesting than that of the principal himself. That Taiga emphasized the politics; the new one looks like it has a lot more action and grittiness.
Looking forward to it!

That's what I thought. It's been a while since I saw Yoshitsune and it'll be nice to have something other then Sengoku/Edo/Bakumatsu for a while. |

That's because Watari Tetsuya is a straight up boss. _________________

Aside from his arrow shot to the monks shrine i have never even in his younger years thought of Kiyomori as a sweaty young man with six pack abs beating the crap out of pirates on the high seas ,yes i know he did subdue pirates but as a commander giving direction not leaping from boat to boar while swatting baddies with an oar .
This drama looks like it was influenced by recent Korean romps which did really well in Japan ,remember this is about the young Kiyomori in his teens and twenties as such i think any one hoping for some Hogen/ Gempei wars will be forced to endure Kiyomori and the Argonauts instead .
Yes Watari is still boss and will remain long after this has sailed into Fukuhara .
This does have a good cast though ,in the mix of ongoing J Poppper's we have fallen ones like Seiko Matsuda and some notable thespians like Kiichi Nakai and Baijaku Nakamura http://www.wiki.d-addicts.com/Upcoming_JDrama .
Looking at the characters that will be played i would imagine the high seas high jinx will give way to more serious stuff in time . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

I do not know if I plan to watch the new Tiaga. Gou left a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully, next year's Tiaga will be better. _________________ You'll Never Walk Alone!

Even NHK admit Gou was a mistake but i do not have much hope for this either .
Funny when Gou ends NHK go into the finale of Saka than its Chushingura time again and at least this one looks interesting it has a great cast and the story line is based on the letters of Oishi and Yasubei and the animosity between the two ,than Kiyomori starts .

Question is which is worse ?
(A)RYOMA DEN
(B)GOU
(C)MUSASHI
(D)TEN CHI JIN
Its tough call but for me Musashi just squeaks by Gou as the worst . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

I heard such bad reviews here for Gou I didn't even bother watching. Ten Chi Jin got worse and worse as it neared the end, like they were laboring to end it. I didn't see Musashi either and probably won't. Ryoma Den was pretty below average also and I think I would take Ten Chi Jin over Ryoma Den. _________________ http://toshogu.blogspot.com

Ryomaden was one of best Taiga for me maybe because I'm a Bakumatsu fan.
I had no problem with Tenchijin, Musashi was kind of boring, Gou was horrible.

The few parts of Gou I saw did not impress me at all. Musashi looked so dull I didn't even bother. I saw a few episodes of Ryomaden here and there, and on an individual episode by episode basis, I didn't find it bad. But I didn't watch the whole thing, but of that list, I'd say Ryomaden was probably the best, although I never saw a single episode of Tenchijin. But I still like Kamikawa Takuya's "Ryoma ga Yuku" better. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

I agree Ryoma Ga Yuku is probably the best depiction or rather the most enjoyable .
Trying to think of any redeeming qualities for Musashi ?.
Here are a few but nothing worth sitting through the whole thing though
(1)Ennio Morricone's score
(2)Think of it as a Samurai romp not a Taiga Drama
(3)Rie Miyazawa as one of Okuni's dancers
(4)Miki Mizuno as Baiken's widow ,great fighting scene with her
(5)Some parts of the Yagyu storyline
Oh well not enough if i countered this with all the bad stuff like lame Seven Samurai tribute id be doing this all night . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

I liked Ryoma Den, specifically, the Sat-Cho alliance meetings, Takasugi Shinsaku, Yamanouchi Toyoshige, the scenes with business/merchant leaders of Nagasaki. Various groups all trying to get alliances for financial/milatary support or weapons.
I also like Ten Chi Jin, with view from the "right hand man's", with the Uesugi’s siding with Mitsunari. The political climate of events leading up to Sekigahara is intriguing to me… each Daimyo allegence to Hideyoshi or Ieyasu, but much less so to Hideyori or Hidetada. As much as Hideyoshi asked for pledges to Hideyori of key vassals, he did to Oda Nobunaga exactly what Ieyasu did to him.. Sanada Masayuki dispatched one son to Ieyasu side and other to Mitsunari's side…so, whoever won, he would have path for his family to continue on. Each Daimyo had this dilemma of which side to go with based on loyalty/alliances, but also how each felt the battle would play out and who would end up winning.
Gou, only seen 1st half of episodes, but hope like other Taiga's, sometimes, 2nd half gets going as 1st half sets up the 2nd half... then again, maybe not.
From what I have seen so far, prefer Atsuhime Drama over Gou for ones that are female perspective based.
as far as Musashi, nothing in his life helped changed the course that the nation eventually took, so, it is harder to make his story interesting. |

Ten Chi Jin was decent up until Sekigahara but after that just seemed like they wanted to rush through the rest of the story. Like the writers or director didn't care so much to put much effort in the remainder of the drama. I did enjoy the episodes involving Nobunaga, especially the Honoji episode. _________________ http://toshogu.blogspot.com

Well, I haven't even tried watching Gou, since you guys all panned it so horribly; Musashi put me to sleep. Just like in the book, his girlfriend was one of the most obnoxiously stupid and needy characters in the history of literature, though the soundtrack by Morricone was pretty cool. I just can't get into the whole "ronin" genre, though; I prefer the complications of samurai being samurai, and Musashi was basically a sociopath.
Ten Chi Jin was very over-acted and over-produced, but I actually enjoyed it; and Ryomaden has the distinction of being the first Taiga, ever, that I couldn't even finish. The first 20 eps. were so painful I never bought the ones that came after.
My all-time faves are still Sanada Taiheike, Aoi, Toshiie to Matsu and Komyo ga Tsuji--in that order.
Atsuhime gets an honorable mention.

All of that, and no Becky? Because I'd watch Becky in a Taiga drama.
(I'd watch Becky eat lunch, or do laundry, for that matter) _________________
