Study of Japanese Dialects Show Japanese Language Is Descended from That of the Rice Growing Farmers Who Came from the Korean Penninsula.

Nothing too earth-shattering for my worldview, but I thought it might be of interest. I'd like to see more of the actual study done, and I'm still interested in seeing more evidence about the details. I also need to think more about the process used as I don't have a clear opinion on it--a part of it feels like guesswork, and I wouldn't mind understanding the underlying methodology a bit more.

The graph looks neat - but I don't understand it. What do the branching lines indicate? That "Tokyo" Japanese is closer to "Old Japanese" than "Yamagata" Japanese? And what do the colors indicate?

The second one will answer many of your questions, Kitsuno.

The colors are language subgroups. For example,

Subgroups are coded with colour circles
(Hirayama, 1992) : yellow, Eastern Japanese; orange, Western Japanese; red,
Hachijyo; blue, Kyushu; purple, Northern Ryukyuan; pink, Southern Ryukyuan

The tree tracks the proposed divergences within the Japanese language (i.e., the appearance of new dialects), leading back to the "root" of the Japonic language.
