The graph looks neat - but I don't understand it. What do the branching lines indicate? That "Tokyo" Japanese is closer to "Old Japanese" than "Yamagata" Japanese? And what do the colors indicate? _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

Here are two more supplementary PDFs:

The second one will answer many of your questions, Kitsuno.
The colors are language subgroups. For example,
| Quote: |
Subgroups are coded with colour circles
(Hirayama, 1992) : yellow, Eastern Japanese; orange, Western Japanese; red,
Hachijyo; blue, Kyushu; purple, Northern Ryukyuan; pink, Southern Ryukyuan |
The tree tracks the proposed divergences within the Japanese language (i.e., the appearance of new dialects), leading back to the "root" of the Japonic language.
Out the door now, though! |
