These are some notes I made several years ago when trying to understand the Ritsuryo chart. It is based off of a combination of the ritsuryo chart published by the Imperial Household Agency and translations out of works by Ivan Morris and Helen Craig McCullough (I believe it was mostly from notes in "The World of the Shining Prince" and the appendix to "A Tale of Flowering Fortunes"). One of the things I most often wonder about, though, is the transliteration. Some of the terms seem to be transliterated using the more native Japanese term for the title (e.g. 'no-kami' or 'no-suke') while others use the straight on'yomi reading.

In addition, most of the info I have on it is late Ritsuryo/Heian period. Certain positions do not seem to have been present in the system during the Nara period, or were called by different names. For instance, some of the capital guard units were apparently different. I'll have to see if I can add to this with Nara terms I come across, unless anyone knows of a good resource for all of that?

Finally, I've had to just make some choices in translation (e.g. are they Ministries, Bureaus, or Departments--I've seen different translations). If someone has an argument one way or another, let me know. Eventually, we should probably have all this stuff in the wiki, though I'm wondering what the format should be--though I have some ideas (we could probably discuss that in the Kenkyushitsu, if needed).

•'Dai' and 'Shō' can be dropped from many job titles when discussing a person, as long as it is clear who they are. E.g. 'Shikibu no Jō' could be used instead of 'Shikibu no Daijō' or 'Shikibu no Shōjō'
•'Yugei' is a term that can be used instead of 'Saemon' or 'Uemon' to distinguish a position in the Gate Guards without making a distinction as to which one. E.g. 'Yugei no Jō'
•'Meryō' is an overarching term for the Left and Right Stables. Also 'Uma no Tsukasa'
•'Udoneri' (内舎人)--A constable chosen from the families of men of the 4th-5th rank to guard high-ranking officials.
•Provincial Officials' ranks were directly tied to the standing of their province. Provinces were 'Great', 'Major', 'Medium', or 'Minor', and the Governor's rank would vary from Junior Fifth Rank, Upper to Junior Sixth Rank, lower. A deputy governor ('Suke') would be called 'governor'
•When a person's rank is higher than that of their position, it is prepended to their title. E.g. 'Shi-i no Shōshō' (Fourth Ranked Junior Assistant Lieutenant)
•'Otodo' or 'Ōitono' more intimate title for a Great Minister (Daijin) or Counselor (Nagon). Alternate titles for Great Ministers were Hidari no Otodo, Migi no Otodo, etc.
•'Yōmei no suke': A sinecure post (Honorary Deputy Governor) bought from a high-ranking nobleman.
•'Azechi' (Provincial Inspector 按察使)
•(Saburai no) Betō: Chief administrator of an Imperial household (Emperor, Prince, etc.)
•Mikushige-dono (Mistress of the Wardrobe 御殿
•'Taifu' can be used to indicate a 5th rank appointment, as well as a job title.
•Yōrō Code distinguished between those appointed by the Emperor, those appointed by the Council of State with Imperial approval, and those unilaterally appointed by the Council of State. Mid-Heian distinctions were kugyō, tenjōbito, and jige:
•Kugyō (Senior Nobles): Ministers of State (Daijin), Major and Middle Councelors (-nagon), holders of the top three ranks, and Royal Advisors (Sangi)
•Tenjōbito (Courtiers): Literally 'Hall Men' they could “enter[, by authority of the reigning sovereign,]the Courtiers' Hall (Tenjō no Ma) of his private residence on the Palace grounds, where their names were inscribed on a special roll, and where they performed numerous designated functions, such as standing night duty.” Although all kugyō had access to the Tenjō no Ma, tenjōbito referred to holders of 4th to 5th rank who held the privilege and to 6th ranked secretaries (Roku-i no Kurōdo). The number of tenjōbito varied from 25 to 30 to greater numbers (always below 100).
•Jige (Men of Low Rank): All other men of rank who were denied access to the imperial hall (and some unfortunate kugyō, called jige no kugyō).

Spinning eyes Whoa, that's quite a list! That's impressive that you dug into the ranks and positions in such detail. Wow!

You could call a page "Ritsuryo Ranks" (If that's what they're called) and list them out. It wouldn't be the first "list" we have, and anyway, you can add info later. Up to you though.

Great research Exclamation (imho) I was wondering if the list got shorter or longer after the Heian period? I know I have read on Shogun Ki some of these titles. I saw that some of these titles remained unfilled, did that occur more or less as economics waned or waxed?

Damn, son, those are the NOTES? Laughing

I really am looking forward to reading through that, but right now I'm sloughing off from working on the Himiko book. Sigh. I feel like a slug.

Amazing list! I am ever so slowly developing an interest in the overall topic of Risuryo. I am sure that this list will be a great resource when I get around to thinking seriously (so to speak) about it.

Thanks!
