Does anyone have any information on the term "ie shihai (イエ支配)"?
It is used quite a bit in the readings I am doing right now but without a concrete definition of what it does and does not refer to as far as medieval power systems. Interestingly, all paper sources render "イエ" solely in katakana.
I did a search through J-Google results without much luck.
Anyone have any sources with a concrete breakdown of the ins and outs of this term?
You can find the term in action and a bit of context here:

Strangely enough, I get no results for the term on either Kotobank or JapanKnowledge.
Really weird that it should be in katakana, right? Why not write 家支配, assuming that's what they're referring to? _________________ 紫水晶殿 - The Amethyst Lord |

In my understanding, they are in katakana to conceptualize and sterilize them - in this case, to separate the building from the concept. _________________ Fukuzawa Yukichi - "Mo' money mo' problems"

Thanks for the link. It was a helpful brief in the background of the term. I didn't know "rural sociology" was an established discipline!
I am more looking for the use of the term specifically in the context of history/its use by historians concerning 城下町 and medieval power systems/structures. I guess my next step will be to hunt out the sources used in that Wikipedia article.
Thanks again! _________________ Fukuzawa Yukichi - "Mo' money mo' problems" |
