Anyone in the Kyoto area, this may be of interest. Dr. Conlan will be speaking on the place of ritual in the Ashikaga power structure. I included the link from the email, but the link doesn't appear to work for me.

The speaker for the February meeting of the Kyoto Asian Studies Group is Thomas D. Conlan, who will present "Ritual Mimesis and Performative Sovereignty in Fourteenth-Century Japan," (see abstract below).
The lecture will be held on Tuesday, February 28th from
6:30-8:30 in Room 213 of the Fusokan on the Doshisha
University Campus (see link below for access information).
Abstract
Ritual Mimesis and Performative Sovereignty in Fourteenth-Century Japan
This talk will explore how the turmoil of the fourteenth century caused the malleable concept of precedent, which had underpinned norms of legitimacy for centuries, to give way to the notion that Shingon Buddhist rituals alone served as the orchestration of power. After showing how the turmoil of the fourteenth century led to the triumph of Shingon mimetic ideals, I will explain how these ideals allowed Ashikaga Yoshimitsu to assert sovereign authority in Japan at the turn of the fifteenth century. Finally, I will allude to the waning of ritual authority over the course of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Thomas D. Conlan is Professor of History at Bowdoin College and a Visiting
Professor at Kanazawa University.
Sponsored by the Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies.
