Why? |
Seppuku remake.
They will never make a remake that is even remotely as good as the original. The original Seppuku is one of my all time favorite films. Incredible film. _________________ http://toshogu.blogspot.com

Slightly related:
A buddy of mine was telling me about a Japanese (I presume) film he was gonna see in an AZ film-fest about the 8th samurai that Kurosawa decided to cut from his masterpiece and his (the actor's?) existential crisis that results from that loss of identity.
I forget what its called ("The 8th Samurai" perhaps...), but I'll look into it and post a thread if interested.

Thanks for posting the link to this. It looks extremely interesting. It could be the Japanese version of "Ed Wood" (well, except it involves a masterpiece instead of schlock). |

I agree with kitsuno ,this is all much ado about nothing
Miike's work in jidai geki has been very good
Roningai (1989 )Asst Director ,completed the film .
Kumamoto Monogatari (Check out the third story about Sassa Narmimassa )
Ten chijin (actor and directed either ep 6 or 8 uncredited )
13 Assassins (great reviews )
plus he was Katsu's pick to helm the post Katsu Zatoichi (way back in the early 90's about 10 years before it was made )while kitano was only meant to be producer .
So i do not see why he will not do a good job . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

Roningai is in my all time top 5 list of jidai-geki. Katsu Shintaro was great in that, it was like he was channeling Mifune. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

My "Why?" wasn't so much directed at Miike directing a Seppuku remake, but more at the fact that its being done in 3-D. I just fail to see the need for that, but then again I don't understand why every movie in the US has to be 3-D either other than the obvious boost in ticket price at the box office. _________________ Pennsylvania is very unstable. 3D can be good (Avatar, How to Train Your Dragon) or it can be horrendous (Clash of the Titans). _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

If you've ever seen "Andy Warhol's Frankenstein" (the X-Rated version) in 3-D on the big screen, you'll know that entrails spilling forth from body cavities to land in your lap carry a substantial impact. |

Since we are on the topic of 3D and you mention Avatar, George Lucas now feels the 3D technology has reached a certain point that he will now be releasing all Star Wars episodes in 3D starting in 2012. Lucas referred to Avatar as demonstrating that the technology is now available to make good movies.

Plus, Ebizo's going to be in the remake! So, how bad could it be?
(Well, pretty terrible, potentially, of course. But I put my faith in Miike and Ebizo to do good work.) _________________ My blog on Japanese art & history: http://chaari.wordpress.com

In this remake, does somebody get to slap Ebizo around for trying to force thugs to drink sake out of an ashtray? Kinda like art imitating real life?
Perhaps the seppuku order comes from daddy Danjuro, who is just horrified by the shame his son has brought on the Ichikawa family and the world of kabuki. _________________

Seppuku is not on hold. Looks like it will be released in Oct. Ebizo was in the news this past week and this film is being billed as part of his comeback. Saw a few clips on tv. I did a double take when I saw Ebizo in full costume. He really looked like Nakadai. _________________

His comeback!! i guess Ebizo has been busy chasing after various actresses ,funny this is the mans real claim to fame much more than being a Kabuki actor but being a bonker of famous leading lady's .
Anyway he was good as Nobunaga in some stage play he did a few years back as such i think this film will be just great .
I should remember 4 films in Miike's world is nothing he can make a film a month ..
Warners/Magnet already have the U.s rights to this . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |

I would too but the theater its playing at here has a very small screen so may as well wait for the DVD .
I wonder if we will get to see the 3D Seppuku here in a theater ?.
Probably not its Multiplex Appeal is minimal at best . _________________ "One mans washing machine is another mans music " |
