While I was in Japan this summer, I realized that I had absolutely no idea what had happened to Edo Castle. Was it incorporated into Emperor Meiji's new palace in Tokyo, or was it completely taken apart? _________________ 行く川の流れは絶えずしてしかも元の水にあらず。淀みに浮かぶうたかたはかつ消えかつ結びて、久しからず留まりたる例なし。この世の中にある人とすみかとまたかくの如し。 |

It's the Imperial Palace--it was taken over when they moved to Tokyo. The main castle keep doesn't remain, but the grounds are the same, as are some of the buildings, I believe. _________________

It's tragic that more of it isn't open to the public. Normally you can only get as far as the gate. A portion of the grounds are opened for New Year's Day and the current Emperor's birthday, but that's all. I haven't worked up the courage to brave the crowds on those two days. _________________ Meditate upon exile, torture, wars, diseases, shipwreck, so that you may not be a novice to any misfortune.

| The main building of Edo castle(天守閣) was burnt down in 1657 and never reconstructed. |

But a part of it, the Higashi Gyoen, is usually open, except Mondays and Fridays. It is the part that has the site of the Edo Castle keep and the shogunal palace. I really enjoyed it.
You can always walk around the whole thing, also.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check it out the next time I'm in that part of town. _________________ Meditate upon exile, torture, wars, diseases, shipwreck, so that you may not be a novice to any misfortune.
