Takaaki Enoki plays the title role of 'Hanjiro'. First saw him as Uesugi Kenshin (Kagetora) in 'Ten to Chi to', and later as Asai Nagamasa in 'Komyo ga Tsugi'.

You are right and of course the guy with the long hair is Teryuki Kagawa who we all know by now .
Id love to see this get subbed and put out as a counterpoint to that stupid Cruise film from 03.

This looks so good I'd even buy it to watch "raw." However, couldn't find it on DVD on either amazon jp. or YesAsia, but they're selling a soundtrack. Anybody know why?

This is actually playing in Chicago this week with subtitles ,Of course its on the festival circuit but i think it may be wishful thinking to hope for a subtitled dvd .

No Kagawa Teruyuki in this film. The two prominent long-haired guys in the clip are Akira from the pop boy-band "Exile" and Enoki Takaaki, who plays the lead role of Nakamura Hanjiro. This movie is the "story" of Nakamura, who was an expert swordsman from Satsuma and a buddy of Saigō Takamori. When Saigō resigned from the Meiji gov't and returned to Satsuma to lead the Seinan revolt, Nakamura Hanjiro also resigned his Imperial army rank (a one-sakura general, I think) to join Saigō and they both of course were killed in the fighting.
Nakamura played a part in numerous Bakumatsu assassinations on behalf of the loyalists and was also the commander of the Imp forces that attacked Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle. Those Satsuma boys under Nakamura's command did not behave very nicely in Aizu.
Anyhoo, IMHO, the BEST movie portrayal of Nakamura Hanjiro was by the late, great Ogata Ken, who played him in 1974's "The Last Samurai" (Okami Yo Rakujitsu o Kire) directed by Misumi Kenji. Ogata's Hanjiro was the lustful and gassy comic relief.
