Sorry for the extremely late reply, Josh.
I sent an email off to Walter Edwards (fantastic work on ancient Japanese archaeology) on this topic. In short, they were rarely if ever buried separately, to the extent that it is safe to say they acted as a piece of the grave goods puzzle. |
