A few weeks ago when I was still living in Nagoya this summer, I bought the book, "The Samurai Banner of Furinkazan". Have any of you read it before, and if you have what were your thoughts on the writing?

It's a rather uninspired and pedestrian translation.

I wish I had a bigger Japanese vocabulary so that I could read it in its original format. At this stage there are still too many kanji and words that I don't know yet. But hopefully a few more years of practice will get me to a point where I can at least attempt it.

Blast! I Sad just bought a copy without knowing much about it, but sucked in by the subject. I'll give it a go anyways.

Ahh! Don't take what Tony wrote to heart. They just secretly gave him a cup of decaf on that day instead of the regular leaded fuel he drinks. Just Kidding

I read the translation of Furin Kazan on the heels of reading John Allyn's very uninspiring "47 Ronin Story". I thought "Furin Kazan" was quite fun and a good read, but as it was written by Inoue Yasushi, I found a lot of similarities with another great book of his, "Tun-Huang", which takes place on the western frontier of Song Dynasty China. It seems Inoue had a tramatic experience in that a young woman he loved died, and she comes back to life, only to tragically die again as characters in his book-- in the case of Furin Kazan, she is Yu-hime. Caocao, I think you'll enjoy "Furin" and if you haven't already read “Tun-Huang", try to get a copy. I think you'll really like that as well.

I've jutst read up to chapter 4 so far. It's a little dry but you often get that with translations of Japanese works in to English (or vice versa I guess). I'll keep at it though.

Dammit, y'know, I *still* can't bring myself to call that anything but Tonko. I blame my having been in Japan when the movie came out -- and it was a major blockbuster event -- so to this day that's the only title I can use. Smile
