Many Shinsengumi books describe that Yamazaki did great job on the Ikedaya Affair.
But his name was not on the Ikedaya bonus list.

Was the episode fiction?

Is he mentioned in Nagakura Shinpachi's journal?

The nagakura's journal do not mention Yamazaki's involvement.
But Nishimura Kanefumi's journal describes the famous episode which Yamazaki was staying in Ikedaya at the night and opened the door from inside for the Shinsengumi.

This is what I wrote at Wikipedia:

"In 1864, Yamazaki and Shimada Kai were assigned by Kondo Isami to investigate the situation which led to the Ikedaya Jiken on July 8. However, there is a theory that Yamazaki's participation in the Ikedaya Jiken is merely fiction by Shimozawa Kan and Shiba Ryotaro."

How about Nishimura Kanefumi?
What did he get the story from?

Without Nishimura's book, this account would probably have been concluded as historically inaccurate by now.

Nishimura was the one who created the episode?
