I've heard of these but never had the opportunity to go through anything but excerpts. Thanks a lot for the links, I deeply appreciate it.

Negotiatrix, you might try 'Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps' by Romulus Hillsborough if you don't already have it. |

He was going to show up on the old forum when his Shinsengumi book was released, but to my knowledge never did. |

He corresponded with me a bit when I put his articles up for him and announced some of his new books. It would be great to have him here for participation in the bakumatsu forum. Someone should drop him a line. |

This book is photo references of Shinsengumi.
Only black and white and not good quality.
But the book contains many hard-to-see stuffs like family registers in Meiji period, temple's kako-cho,and other rare documents.
I have never seen my own family's kako-cho.
Because I do not have permission from "Hon-ke" which is head family of all of relatives.(My family is "Bun-ke") |

This website has amazingly high quality images of dozens of japanese historical figures, including some shinsengumi members, etc (I took a lot of them for avatars for the "historical" section)

*Saito Hajime in this book is really really cool. |

The Shinsengumi Exhibition catalog 2004
http://www.edo-tokyo-museum.or.jp/kikaku/page/2004/0404/200404.html
This book is one of the best reference for Shinsengumi research.
It contains many good quality photos of primary documents.
The exhibition was over but the Edo-Tokyo museum shop still sells the book. |

|
|
|
The book was a disappointment--especially after reading his books on Ryoma and his Samurai Sketches. I really enjoyed these two books.
I found the Shinsengumi book flawed in terms of flow and failed to really understand what Hillsborough wanted the reader to understand other than that the Shinsengumi had a propensity to ruthlessly cut their opponents and themselves to ribbons!
By the way, does anyone know what has become of Mr. Hillsborough? I heard he was working on an all-encompassing history of the bakumatsu period and am hoping he has got his groove back as this book could be quite an informative and entertaining gem. Unfortunately, it looks like Hillsborough's company, Ridgeback Press, has folded he has slipped off the grid.
Can somebody call out the Kurokawa ninjas to track him down and find out what he is going to do with this alleged book he is working on? |

You should email him - I've corresponded with him a few times. I don't have his email address now, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. |
