I'll take your guys' comments under advisement, but I don't know if I'll be able to resist the lure of Nakama Yukie. She's got me interested in the "Oh-Oku" movie despite only having sat through a handful of episodes of the series.

Isn't this an anime? Does her voice sing the Song of the Siren? Does her anime alter ego cut an impressive figure? I don't get it.

Inoue Takehiko just recently published (late Nov '06) 2 soft-cover coffee table books of his Vagabond artwork- one in b&w, properly called "Sumi" and the other one is in color. You can get these from Amazon Japan. I bought them both and really marvelled at the artwork.

Haven't bought them yet, but I've seen them at the stores in Akihabara and they're *gorgeous*. "Sumi" and "WATER".

I buy most of my books used at BOOK-OFF, but overseas folks interested in Japanese-language manga might like Animaxis. The historical selection is a little on the slim side (no LEED Publishing books, AFAIK), but they've got most of the other series I've mentioned so far. Not sure how shipping compares with Amazon.co.jp.

Baian and Obenjo are talking about the recent "Shinobi" movie, which like "Basilisk" is an adaptation of the "Kouga Ninpou-chou" novel.

The one I got was a comic book of 18 pages or so, not a "traditional Manga". maybe they rereleased it...?

You must have gotten a special promotional item. If my memory isn't off, the books are all between 150 to 225 pages in length. I have all 24 of the English-language volumes that have been published to date.I can verify this if need be later when I am back at home.

No, it was a "comic book". I don't have it with me, but it was DarkHorse quality, full color cover, the whole nine yards, black and white pages, roughly 8.5x11 inches, and around 18 or 20 pages, the normal standard comic book length. This was years ago, way back when it was first released in the US. I think they re-released it in graphic novel/manga form.

Dark Horse began publishing its manga line as regular comics (20 pages or so), reading left to right with 'reversed' artwork. Once the anime/manga craze began to catch on in America, they started doing the thicker books read right to left. They still print some manga titles as regular comics.

Azumi / Koyama Yuu / Shogakukan
あずみ / 小山ゆう / 小学館

Young Azumi was one of ten orphans trained in assassination and the ninja arts at a secret cabin deep in the mountains. Her mentor Jii, a former samurai, devoted years to molding each child into killing machines, ordering each naive orphan to slaughter their best friend as a final test. The survivors learn that their mission is to go forth and assassinate various political and military personalities, allowing Tokugawa Ieyasu (who is painted in a fairly positive light) to consolidate his hold on Japan and put a stop to the endless wars.

This manga is the basis for the two "Azumi" movies starring Ueto Aya. The artwork is a bit on the crude side and character development happens at a glacial pace. A variety of historical personages show up in the series (Katou Kiyomasa, etc.), but they tend to be portrayed in a cartoonish manner (as in "Daffy Duck", not "Ninja Scroll"). So far 40 volumes of "Azumi" have been released, marking it as a popular, successful manga by most standards, but I cannot recommend it. After reading the first six volumes (over a thousand pages; I think I gave the series a fair shot), my advice is to stick with the movies. Ueto Aya is prettier than the bland-faced comic heroine, and the movie characters somehow manage to be *less* cheesy than those in the manga (if you can believe that).

The anime is alright if you like over-the-top ninja action. Just be sure to avoid the live action, that's all.

I liked that! It was in the same film ('Kunoichi') that had the female ninja that featured the unique 'you must have sex with me in order to activate my power' thang.

Oh, the possibilities:

"Wake up honey!"
"...huh? What?"
"I think there is an intruder in the house, we need your ninja magic!"
"Oh, Ok!"

Time passes....

"Oh, sorry, false alarm. Better safe than sorry, right?"

Thanks for the recommendations, shikisoku. Of the series you listed, I had only seen "Sidooh". I'll have to check some of them out.

I've seen this series, and it looks interesting. Apparently a disease leads to the death of a large proportion of the male population, resulting in a female samurai class. One of my co-workers has the books, and if she lends them to me I'll write a critique.

Oshitone Tenzen / Yamaguchi Masakazu / Shueisha
おしとね天繕 / 山口譲司 / 集英社

The hero of this series is Sumeragi Tenzen, who serves as plump, dopey Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi's Toko Aratamegata Hittou-ashirai (床与方筆頭会釈), which basically means that he chooses which of the women in the Oh-oku the shogun will sleep with each night. His other duties include recruitment for the Oh-oku (he has the right to undress and examine basically any woman he chooses) and occasionally acting as a sex advisor or instructor when things aren't going as well as they should. His master isn't incredibly bright, and most manga with a premise like this would probably have the protagonist be a lecherous pervert who plays around behind the shogun's back, but Tenzen is loyal to a fault, ultra-competent, and extremely professional.

This series is a guilty pleasure. It's a sex comedy, but a good one. It has a fun, positive attitude to the subject matter, unlike a lot of ero-manga (the series runs in businessman-oriented "Ultra JUMP", so it's fairly adult but far from straight-up porn). There are a lot of historical parodies (including a pretty bizarre send-up of the 47 Ronin), and the art is attractive. Yamaguchi's girls are drawn in a very modern style, unlike a lot of the historical manga I've listed so far.

Five volumes have been released to date, and the series is continuing. The official homepage can be found here.

I have to ask - are there any cool Tarrantino-esque Shinsengumi manga? It's such a fitting genre for some hardcore violence and cool dismemberments. I'd even consider paypaling one of you guys in Japan to get my hands on a good one.

shikisoku might know, there are a LOT of Shinsengumi manga around, but Bakumatsu stuff makes my eyes glaze over and I purposely avoid most of it. Maybe I'd enjoy it more if I knew that section of history better. I *am* currently reading a Bakumatsu-heavy manga anthology (one volume, not a series) called Hitokiri Ryouma that's a bit on the gory side, though. I'll post a write-up about it sometime next week, as soon as I've finished it.

If you want gore, though, Shigurui is THE series for that. We're talking spools of intestines, complete with the arteries and veins drawn in with loving detail, people getting their lower jaws hacked off, nipples torn off; it's pretty ghastly.

I just came up with a script that would get the Tatsunoshi academy award for best picture. The plot goes something like this:

"Beppin" is doing a night shoot on the top floor of a tokyo highrise, when the power is cut. Girls start getting killed off one by one by a demonic stalker wearing a hockey mask and a Shinto costume, and driven with the singleminded urge to kill.

Girls, horror, and shinto, all rolled into one!

Don't forget the 18 year old Miko who saves the day in a battle to the death with the stalker, where sword slashes conveniently cut off more and more of her shrine maiden outfit. Oh, and the demon stalker is revealed to be a malevolent fox kami in the form of Iijima Ai.

Just as long as Jeffrey Combs gets a part as Dr. Herbert West, who fled to Japan to continue his research, and reanimated the corpse of a beppin model, and imbued her with the life energy of a fox!

And by the way, it just gets better:
