It is like some kind of stick and resembles a miniature mop lol. So what is that accessory or what are those accessories (seems like there are different too) ? here @ 3:41 --> and another @ 10:28 --> Thanks in advance! I tried to find a proper section for this noob question. Hopefully this is the right place. Sorry if it's not. |

Are you talking about the war fan? I just realized I've never looked into its purpose. Maybe a convenient way to point to stuff to attack?

Well, the video didn't load for me. So I can't be 100% sure of what you're talking about, but I'll shoot for a possibility. Is it the Saihai, like seen in Hojo Soun's statue at Odawara? i.e. this: ![]() As far as I understand it was used because it was easily portable (just slips through your belt and hangs there) and was used as a signaling device similar to the uchiwa, gunbai, and tessen/gunsen. While the gunbai also doubled as a personal sunshade and makeshift shield the uchiwa was popular as a fan and the tessen and gunsen were also portable and could be used as a fan. Given what I know of military signaling I imagine that the general could swing or tilt his saihai in a particular fashion so as to give a signal to his men to follow or point a particular direction. He could also wave it around to signaling advance, withdrawal, or simply to show he was alive if a rumor spread that he had been killed, captured, or wounded. |

There we go. Yes Yoshitsugu should be holding a Saihai in the first part (3:41) and Ishida is holding either a Tessen (or gunsen, hard to tell the difference without holding one, I think). And I hope you're happy; my wife called me a nerd. That is a video in Japanese with Korean subtitles...and based entirely on their outfits and mon I was able to narrate what was happening and a vague idea of what was being said, identifying characters as soon as they appeared (Otani, Fukushima, Ukita, etc.) even though I can't speak Japanese and I can't read Korean. Although if anyone knows a version of this with English subtitles I would cherish a link; I've wanted to watch it for quite a while now. |

I had completely forgotten that I had made this thread. Thank you both for your answers! I thought that it would be nice souvenir when I get to go to Japan. Also Otsuzumi drum and Horagai/jinkai conch shell would be cool instruments.
