So hopefully this will be the first episode in a series of videos/vlogs I'm going to do about the Sengoku Jidai: The audio is a little low, but if you are in a quiet room or using headphones you should hear me without a problem. I give a big shout out to the Samurai Archives and tell people to be sure to buy books through the SA Amazon Bookstore! In this episode I take on the concept of bushido, something that the SA podcast has already torn to pieces, both in their recent episode detailing the evolution of bushido and their "samurai behaving badly" episodes. However I wanted to add my voice to the chorus because I think bushido is probably one of the biggest misconceptions that prevent people who have only been exposed to samurai via pop culture from understanding the historical reality of the samurai and the Sengoku period. Also, I do note that I am not an expert on this topic and that my pronunciation of Japanese is shaky at best. I also doubt I will be covering anything new to regular forum members here, but please remember that this is aimed at people who only know about samurai through movies and video games, not SA forums folks who have been studying this subject for a long time. I also know that I made some mistakes in this episode, such as by saying "Kotaro Fuma" and not "Fuma Kotaro." In my next episode I will do a very brief thumbnail sketch of Japanese history up to the 15th century, with the primary focus being on the Onin War and going into detail about the Onin War, its causes and its consequences. Hopefully that will be new ground for listeners to the podcast, since I don't think the podcast has covered the Onin War outside of the timeline series, which had to be very concise since the entirety of Japanese history was being covered in some detail. Please let me know what you think! |

So here is the second episode of the Sengoku Series: https://youtu.be/AUeHUzGCvG0 In this episode I provide a very brief thumbnail sketch of the political history of Japan from ancient times to the Onin War, and then going into detail about the causes and consequences of the conflict between the Hosokawa and Yamana clans in the late 1400s (as well as the tragi-comic fate of Ashikaga Yoshimi). Please enjoy, and as always, constructive feedback is welcome! |

I lost track of this thread before I could watch the first vid. I'm watching it now. Well, I like it, it's an informative rundown. You're probably better on the mic than I am. Totally unrelated to the content, I was thinking it would add to the atmosphere if you had something you could stick in the background. Like a suit of armor, or the severed heads of your enemies, or Mt. Fuji or something...

Thanks! I want to try going to more scenic locales, but the problem is making movies on my laptop drains the battery very quickly, so more often than not I have to have it plugged in. Why aren't there any power outlets in the park?! |

New video is up: http://youtu.be/vZdM6QiWzEw In this episode I talk about Shinto and Buddhism in medieval Japan. I discuss how faith differs conceptually in Japanese culture to the West, the rise of Buddhist temples as political institutions, the parallels of Nichiren Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism in medieval Japan! I also discuss the Ikko-ikki as the loose-knit but widespread fighting force of the Honganji. As always, I am not a specialist, just an enthusiast, so corrections and criticism will be taken in good spirit! I hope you find it educational and not too boring! And thanks to Kitsuno for the sticky and the props suggestion

New video: https://youtu.be/Mavw6j_9R8E Sorry for the delay. Been busy with real life! In this relatively short video I talk about ninja/shinobi, misconceptions about them in Western pop culture, and some of the actual history of Iga and Koga province, Hattori Hanzo, Fuma Kotaro and so on. |

Hello everyone, Obviously, the Sengoku Series has been on hold for several months. Long story short, my fiance was diagnosed with breast cancer very suddenly in February and underwent surgery over the last couple months that required me to step up in terms of being a partner as well as a father to our 21-month-year-old daughter. In addition, I am also a PhD student working on his dissertation. With this storm of factors, I had to put the Series on hold very abruptly, and while I have been meaning to post something for awhile, samurai history has been rather low on my priority list... I will return with more videos soon, however, picking up the bio of Oda Nobunaga I was doing before. I still have Lamers' book checked out after all this time.... ![]() Anyway, watch this space. You haven't seen the last of my ugly mug! Regards, Saru |

https://youtu.be/tWfBwJdTSRQ I'm back, baby! I have returned. In this episode I discuss the life of Oda Nobunaga from roughly 1568 to the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. I discuss his interesting political relationship with Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the formation of the first anti-Oda alliance and Nobunaga's brutal tactics when dealing with his enemies. |

I'm back, baby... again? https://youtu.be/vq9hdJn2MSk It's been a LONG time, but as I go over in my new video, my partner beat cancer, but unfortunately we broke up last summer... Now that things have settled down I've resolved to pick up the Sengoku series and keep it going. So this is the long long long overdue conclusion to the three-part videos I was doing on Oda Nobunaga and his life. In this one I talk about his getting cut down at the height of his power, just after projecting his might with the Kyoto Cavalcade and being offered the position of shogun. |

It's been a few days since my last video wrapping up my Oda Nobunaga series, but I wanted to an extra "epilogue" video where I consider Oda Nobunaga as a ruler, especially through the lens of Niccolo Machiavelli, since Lamers makes several references to Machiavelli in his biography and even wrote a short article on the subject: http://iias.asia/iiasn/13/Regional/13ceca03.html I also talk a little about the possibility of doing a video (or series of videos) about the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, since it's the 100th anniversary... Enjoy! https://youtu.be/ha9DwnQ53BQ |

It's Saru time, baby! This latest episode is the first in a series of videos about Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In this video I discuss the legends surrounding his early life, his defeat of Akechi Mitsuhide at Yamazaki in 1582, his subsequent defeat of Shibata Katsuie at Shizugatake in 1583, and finally the Komaki campaign against Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1584. The next video will deal with the conquest of Shikoku and Kyushu, Hideyoshi's appointment as imperial regent, his land survey and sword hunt, as well as the subjugation of the Hojo. The last video will be about the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 up to Hideyoshi's death in 1598. Thanks for watching! https://youtu.be/gYspfTOj-94 |

So in this last week or so I've released two more episodes about Toyotomi Hideyoshi: Hideyoshi at his high point: https://youtu.be/hj4-X9wxX6I Hideyoshi's final years: https://youtu.be/K1YVzpnHX40 I'm pretty happy with how these turned out and I'm thankful to the viewer who asked me about Hideyoshi's persecution of Christians. I definitely skipped over the 1587 edict but I get to it in the last video. Unfortunately, in my discussion of the Imjin War I forgot to mention the supremacy of the Korean navy! Oh well. Coming soon... Tokugawa Ieyasu! |

Hey folks... It's been almost a month since my last video, but I'm back with my first video about Tokugawa Ieyasu aka Matsudaira Motonobu aka Matsudaira Motoyasu! https://youtu.be/EHiIx7HSLzE I discuss his origins, his alliance with Oda Nobunaga and his battles with Takeda Shingen. I also forgot to mention that I posted an epilogue episode where I discuss Toyotomi Hideyoshi's questionable decisions in his later life, and the theory that he went mad from syphilis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3qGMKjBpZo |
