This was the Shogatsu drama for the year 2002. Many wished it had been an actual Taiga Drama. It was hugely popular here on the old board, even two boards ago maybe ?.
Great cast, it was the first of a trilogy with Taika No Kashin and Daibutsu Kaigen being the other two . However only Shotoku Taishi was subtitled .

Anyway i found a three year old download link, and i am seeding it should anyone wish to grab it .Subtitle file is linked, its on D-Addix .

I thought this was a great drama, and highly recommend it .

Apparently the only Taiga on a period earlier than Taira no Kiyomori was the 1976 one,
Wind, Cloud, and Rainbow (風と雲と虹と) on Taira no Masakado (d. 940), and it (or at least the second half) was a true Sengoku drama with hostages, spies, and ninja.
As you say, things did happen earlier also.

Thanks Wicked L, I hadn't heard of this one before your post. I checked it out and it was an interesting watch. It felt quite different due to the rare setting and time period, and I can't recall ever personally seeing a jidaigeki during pre-Heian days.
